Community Service Sites
The Community Service Programs offer youth an opportunity to be held accountable, focusing on the victim and/or community, rather than themselves. In some cases, monetary restitution exceeds the amount the child is able to pay or age hinders the ability to obtain viable part time employment. In such instances, community service is an option utilized by Judges for the youth’s accountability. Youths are placed at approximately 51 sites in the community, depending on their age, skill level, and the offense for which they were referred to the Court.

Teen Court
Teen Court is a DeKalb County program designed to give a second chance to ‘first time offenders’. Youth with misdemeanor offenses are held accountable through sentencing involving their peers. The purpose of the court is to provide a community based alternative to the formal court process. Our goal is to transform first time offenders into last time offenders.

Student volunteers are selected from local high schools and assume actual roles of the Judge, Prosecutor, Defense Attorney, Bailiff, and Probation Officer. Students strictly uphold the Oath of Confidentiality, attend all court trainings, and adhere to DeKalb Juvenile Court policies and procedures. Teen Court participation is well received on college applications, job interviews and internship candidacies.

The court sessions are held in our new state of the art courtroom facility, and each case is handled in collaboration with the District Attorney’s office. This restorative program functions primarily during the DeKalb County public schools calendar. Teen Court is a premiere tool for community empowerment in the form of justice for youth, by youth.

Youth Diversion Program

Youth Diversion
The Youth Diversion Program is a community based program that consist of seven (7) sites throughout DeKalb County. The sites consist of volunteer panels. The panel members actually interview first-time, misdemeanor offenders and their parents and determine consequences for the offender, based on the offense and the information obtained from the interview. The panels meet monthly. Once consequences have been assigned, a member from the panel elects to mentor with the child for up to ninety(90) days.

Based upon the recommendation of the panel members, youth who successfully complete the program have an opportunity to have their charge dismissed by the court.

Volunteers are provided with adequate training in working with children and their families, and identifying appropriate consequences. Training classes takes place approximately three times a year.
